How to Use Wax Melts: A Beginner's Guide
Share
Wax melts are one of the easiest ways to fill your home with fragrance. Whether you're unwinding after a busy day or simply making your space feel a little more welcoming, they're simple to use and require very little effort.
If you've never tried wax melts before, this beginner's guide explains everything you need to know.
What is a wax melt?
A wax melt is a scented piece of wax that is gently warmed in a wax burner or electric wax warmer to release its fragrance.
Unlike a candle, wax melts don't have a wick. The wax itself isn't used up as it's warmed. Instead, the fragrance gradually evaporates over time. Once the scent has faded, you simply replace the wax with a fresh piece.
What do you need to get started?
You'll only need two things:
- A scented wax melt
- A wax warmer, either:
- an electric wax warmer, or
- a tea light wax burner.
If you're using one of our wax melt cubes, place one cube into the dish at the top of your warmer.
If you're using one of our snap bars, simply break off one segment and place it into the dish.
For tea light burners, use an unscented four-hour tea light underneath the dish. If you're using an electric warmer, switch it on and allow the wax to warm gently.
Within a few minutes, the fragrance will begin to fill your room.
How do wax melts work?
As the wax warms, the fragrance oils are released into the air, creating a long-lasting home fragrance.
The wax remains in the burner until the fragrance has been used. Although the wax may still look the same, it will eventually stop releasing scent. That's the time to replace it with a fresh wax melt.
How long do wax melts last?
The fragrance from a single wax melt will vary depending on the scent, room size, burner type and how long you use it each time.
As a general guide, one wax melt typically provides around 8 to 12 hours of fragrance.
Once the scent has faded, allow the wax to cool and solidify before removing it. You can usually gently pop the wax out of the dish. If it's difficult to remove, warm it for 20 to 30 seconds so it loosens slightly, then absorb the softened wax with cotton wool or a paper towel before wiping the dish clean.
Are soy wax melts a good choice?
Soy wax is made from soybean oil, a renewable plant-based resource, and is a popular choice for home fragrance.
At The Little Wax Pantry, we use soy wax because it provides a smooth finish, works well with fragrance oils and creates beautiful wax melts designed to gently scent your home.
Wax melt safety tips
Using wax melts is straightforward, but it's always important to use your warmer safely.
- Never add water to your wax burner.
- Don't overfill the dish.
- Keep burners away from children and pets.
- Never leave a lit tea light unattended.
- Allow the wax to cool before removing or replacing it.
- Follow the manufacturer's instructions for your wax burner.
